The costs people forget
Drinks and showers
Drinks at the hut, sometimes paid showers or bottled water: a few euros a day that add up.
Transport
The trip to Chamonix and back, plus maybe a bus or a lift to shorten a stage. Getting there
Insurance
Insurance covering search and rescue in the mountains, in France, Italy and Switzerland. In Switzerland especially, a helicopter rescue can be very expensive.
Keeping costs down
- Mix huts and campsites: a tent cuts the cost of a night by three or four.
- Shop in the valleys (Les Contamines, Courmayeur, Champex, Argentière) rather than buying every lunch at huts.
- Book early: the cheaper dorm beds go first.
- June and September are sometimes a little cheaper in valley hotels.
