Gear for the TMB

Staying in huts, you need no tent or stove: a 30 to 40-litre pack is enough. The goal is to stay under 7 to 9 kg including water. Tick the list as you go, it is saved in your browser.

Boots: the choice that matters most

Mid-cut hiking boots or trail shoes with good grip both work. What matters: they must be broken in over several long outings with ascent. Never start the TMB in new footwear.

Early in the season, snow patches make a lugged sole and gaiters more useful; in high summer, lighter breathable shoes are less tiring.

Camping or bivouacking

Add a light tent, sleeping bag (comfort around 0 to 5 °C), mat, stove and pot, and food between resupplies. The pack then rises to 12–15 kg: plan shorter stages.
